McCains begravelse gav smæk til Trump

Senator John McCain døde i sidste uge, og i denne uge var det så tid til begravelsen.

McCain benyttede lejligheden til at kritisere Trump, hans politik og overtagelse af Det Republikanske Parti en sidste gang ved ikke at invitere præsidenten til sin begravelse.

Imens var tidligere præsidenter fra  Bill Clinton over George W. Bush til Barack Obama til stede. Og de holdt sig ikke tilbage i talerne. 

Fra George W. Bush lød det: "He was honorable, always recognizing that his opponents were still patriots and human beings. He loved freedom with the passion of a man who knew its absence. He respected the dignity inherent in every life, a dignity that does not stop at borders and cannot be erased by dictators. Perhaps above all, John detested the abuse of power, could not abide bigots and swaggering despots."

Barack Obama erklærede: "So much of our politics, our public life, our public discourse, can seem small and mean and petty. Trafficking in bombast and insult and phony controversies and manufactured outrage, it's a politics that pretends to be brave and tough but in fact is born of fear. John called on us to be bigger than that. He called on us to be better than that."

Og den mest svidende lussing til Trump som person kom fra John McCains datter, Meghan McCain:

"We gather to mourn the passing of American greatness—the real thing, not cheap rhetoric from men who will never come near the sacrifice he gave so willingly, nor the opportunistic appropriation of those who live lives of comfort and privilege while he suffered and served. The America of John McCain has no need to be made great again because America was always great."

Dog er kritikken næppe noget, der ændrer det store ved, at Republikanerne er Donald Trumps parti, og de traditionalistiske McCain-republikanere har tabt kampen om partiets sjæl.

90 % af republikanerne bakker om om Trump. Imens viste den sidste meningsmåling af McCains popularitet, at kun 41 procent af Republikanerne så positivt på præsidentens største modstander fra egne rækker. Hos Demokraterne bakkede 60 procent op om McCain.
